Building in Strategic Thinking: A Guide for Charity and Non-Profit Leaders

Do you ever feel like you’re constantly busy but not sure if you’re moving forward? That’s a common feeling when you’re caught up in day-to-day tasks without taking time to think strategically. Strategic thinking is essential for ensuring that you’re heading in the right direction and achieving your goals.

What is Strategic Thinking?

Strategic thinking involves big-picture thinking and setting the right goals. It’s about looking up from your daily tasks, looking forward to the future you want to achieve, and looking outward to understand your environment. It’s also about looking inward to see what’s happening in your organisation and setting your course accordingly.

Why is it important?

So, once upon a time I decided to run a half marathon despite not being fit enough. For the last few miles I was looking down at my feet focusing on just taking that next step. I didn’t look up to see where I was going. But, there were marshals and a well-marked route, so I didn’t need to think about it. If I hadn’t had those guardrails, I could have ended up anywhere! And that’s why it’s so important to make sure you take time to plan in strategic thinking. As the leader You have to look up. You are the marshal, and you are laying out the path for your organisation. If you’re busy putting one foot in front of the other along with everyone else, you won’t be able to make sure everyone is heading in the right direction.

How Often Should You Engage in Strategic Thinking?

  1. Regular Check-Ins (Monthly)
    Spend 1-2 hours each month reviewing performance data, assessing progress against goals, and determining if any changes are needed.
  2. Strategic Review (Quarterly)
    Dedicate half a day each quarter to review data from monthly check-ins, assess market and internal shifts, and make necessary adjustments.
  3. Strategic Planning (Annually)
    Set aside a full day, preferably offsite and without distractions, to review the past year, set long-term goals, and plan for the future.

Tips for Effective Strategic Thinking

  • Create the Right Environment: Find a place with no Wi-Fi or phone signal, use pen and paper, get outside or surround yourself with the right people and energy.
  • Stay at the Big Picture Level: Focus on the overall direction and avoid getting bogged down in details.

By setting aside time for strategic thinking, you can ensure that you’re leading your organisation in the right direction and achieving your goals. Remember, strategic thinking is a skill that can be developed with practice. So, block out time for it in your calendar and make it a priority.
