A strategy isn’t a to-do list. One common pitfall is listing everything an organisation does and calling it a strategy, often grouping activities into themes or pillars. This approach is usually too broad and lacks direction. Your strategy should prioritise and guide decision-making, not just list tasks.
Remember, non-negotiables like compliance and financial management don’t need to be part of your strategy. These are the basics of running a good organisation. The strategy should focus on areas where you have a choice and need to prioritise.
Identifying Your North Star
The most successful strategies are single-minded about the highest priority for the organisation – your North Star goal. This makes decision-making straightforward. Always choose the path that moves you closest to this goal. Even having two goals can lead to conflicts and tough choices about resource allocation.
While it might feel constraining to have just one North Star goal, it actually provides clarity and eases decision-making. Ensure everyone in your organisation understands and aligns with this goal.
Developing Your Single-minded Strategy
Once you’ve identified your North Star goal, develop your strategy as a high-level approach to reach it. It’s not a detailed plan but a broad guide. Fighting the Urge to ‘And’
Beware of the word ‘and’ in your strategy. It can introduce potential conflicts and dilute effectiveness. Keeping your strategy single-minded and focused on your North Star goal is the most effective way to use your limited resources and achieve significant progress toward your objectives.
